he'd rent us movies pretty often.
he'd give me writing and math assignments, but i wouldn't usually do any of them unless he was there.
he gave me a lot of shit becos of that.
he talked a lot about fidel castro, kamikaze pilots, nikola tesla, and other things.
he loved to read.
he'd scold me if he ever caught me with my shirt untucked.
he'd debate and argue about any particular issue with anybody and (often) everybody.
he'd tell me my teeth were too messed up.
he'd blast aniceto molina, pink floyd, or the phantom of the opera a lot.
he hated mcdonald's, but he took me and my sister anyway (on special occasions).
he never asked about me or the things i liked. least not that i can remember.
he probably just assumed he knew.
he's a workaholic.
on our way home, if we (my sister, my mother and i) saw his truck parked in the driveway, we'd just pass the house and find something to do. maybe go to the library or the market or something; just to kill time until we assumed he'd fallen asleep.
he took me once to a small bookstore where i recieved my first dictionary. it was tiny but thick.
years later, in the eighth grade i was called upon to read a random passage from a bible. i didn't have one, so i used this dictionary to pass as a little bible. i recited words from pink floyd's sheep:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
nobody was the wiser.
he took us to borders bookstores a lot.
he always gave me and my sister money. (....probably why i don't value the stuff as i should)
he'd talk shit about "doctors with needles" and pop music and fat people and some other things.
he tried to teach my stuff about cars and electrical stuff at construction sites.
he wanted to send me to loyola so that i could be a scientist.
i don't think my father ever really got through to me.
